Building the Future from What Is Already There
What if the most progressive way to build starts with what already exists? In Cologne-Ehrenfeld, designdirektive is turning that question into a six-day experiment in circular design, architecture and construction.
For designdirektive, circularity begins with a simple observation: valuable things are being thrown away every day. The Cologne studio started out rescuing furniture and has since expanded its thinking across interiors, deconstruction, material recovery and reuse — connecting what comes out of one building with what could become part of the next.
“Zirkularität funktioniert dann, wenn man sie einfach macht und anfängt.”
Circularity works when you simply do it — and start.
During Design Season Cologne, that attitude takes over the studio’s 1,500-square-metre home on Stolberger Straße. For six days, CircBuild turns the protected 1950s building — itself once threatened with demolition — into a meeting place for design, architecture and circular construction.
And the building is more than a backdrop. It is part of the argument.
CircBuild asks what can remain, what can be dismantled and reused, and how we can design with resources already available. Instead of separating those questions into individual brand worlds, designdirektive brings the different parts of the process together.
Knepper Gruppe looks at deconstruction and material recovery, while Madaster and STADTGRAD connect existing materials with digital tools and architectural planning. Andreu World brings the perspective of furniture production, Occhio light, Mogu biobased materials and acoustics, sonoro sound and longevity, Plantclub circular planting concepts and Cologne’s ecosign Akademie für Gestaltung the perspective of the next generation.
The result is a shared exhibition in which one idea can lead naturally to the next: from dismantling to material, from material to planning, from planning to a new interior.
That thinking has been part of designdirektive from the beginning. Vomberg describes the original motivation behind the Möbelkiste very simply: it made little sense to keep extracting new resources while millions of functioning materials were being discarded. Today, the team applies that principle on a much larger scale.
CircBuild turns it into an experience.
Across the week, visitors can discover the launch of Madaster Match, explore urban mining with designdirektive and Knepper, join an emotional lighting workshop with Occhio, make their own mycelium material sample with Form and Fungi, experience circular construction in VR with ICoM / RWTH Aachen, or join a roundtable that brings the different disciplines together.
Between talks and workshops, the house stays open: coffee, showroom, sound, conversations, an evening apéro and on Thursday, a party.
Because perhaps the future of circular design needs exactly this: fewer isolated solutions and more people sitting around the same table.
CircBuild turns what already exists into a starting point and shows how much future can be found in what is already here.
